Ideas Have Consequences

Bishop Barron explores four thinkers who are shaping the world that we are confronting: Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Michel Foucault. Once we understand some of their most basic ideas, we will recognize their influence everywhere today.

I recently enjoyed this thoughtful presentation by Bishop Robert Barron addressing this convulsive time in our national history, demonstrated by the global pandemic, unstable politics, and outbursts of violence. Bishop Barron is certainly correct that not many people understand the ideologies that stand behind the rioting and deep unrest that we have seen on our city streets, the mayhem at the Capitol on January 6, angry protests outside school board meetings, and so on.

Bishop Barron helps us step back a bit from current events and explore four thinkers who have had a profound impact in shaping the world that we are confronting: Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Michel Foucault. Once we understand some of their most basic ideas, we will recognize their influence everywhere today.

This made for a wonderful 50 minutes on the lawn mower, and perhaps you will find it a great listen as well. Thoughtfulness and depth among Christians of all stripes is one of the greatest needs in this moment, and Kingdom Harbor exists to bring people more constructive dialogue and thoughtful engagement on today’s challenges. Enjoy!
