Here’s a retelling of a parable through the lenses of the Enneagram.
Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in their False Self, thinking they were the better personality Type and regarded other Enneagram Types with contempt:
“Two different personality types went up to the temple to pray, one a self-righteous Type One and the other a self loathing Type Four. The One, standing by himself, was praying thus, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other types: suspicious Sixes, fickle Sevens, passive Nines, or this sulking Four. I say my prayers, read my Bible and go to church every Sunday.’ But the Four, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating her breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a struggling but increasingly self-aware Four!’
I tell you, this Four went down to her home in a right relationship with God rather than the other; for all who exalt their personality type over others will be humbled, but all who humble themselves and learn to show compassion to those who are different will be exalted.” (Luke 18:9-14 rewritten).
Lord, use the Enneagram tool to help me grow in self-awareness and empathy toward others. Help me learn to love You with all my feeling, thinking and doing, and to love others as I learn to better love my self. Amen.
