Jesus is quite clear about the purpose his disciples are supposed to serve as they follow Jesus’ unique way of life together as described in the Sermon on the Mount. They are supposed to be salt and light to those around them. The task becomes all that much clearer and challenging when we personalize this job-description with our own church’s name and the local mission field where we live. Here’s our call dear friends of MainStreet in Mound, MN. These are the marching orders of our Risen King Jesus:
“MainStreet Covenant Church is the salt of Mound. But what good is a church if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as useless. MainStreet Covenant Church is the light of Mound—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let MainStreet Covenant Church’s good deeds shine out for the entire town to see, so that everyone in Mound will praise your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:13-16 My Paraphrase)
What a glorious challenge and magnificent invitation! Are you ready to live this out? I mean, really? Come hear more about how we’re going to strive to be this kind of a church in Mound on Saturday, April 16 at 6:30 at the Mound High School Little Theater. The more individual lights that show up, the brighter we can shine in this city!
