Noah’s Ark Found (Again) on Mount Ararat?

Noah’s ancient ark is once again making the news. Is this the real deal?  Probably not, but why not let ourselves indulge in some Indiana Jones like dreaming for a while.

Here’s the story from the Daily Telegraph.  Here’s Ben Witherington’s comments on this recurring alleged discovery. From the Telegraph:

A group of Chinese and Turkish evangelical Christians said they had uncovered remnants of Noah’s Ark on its legendary mountain resting place in Turkey.

Noah’s Ark Ministries International, a Hong Kong-based documentary outfit, said they recovered wooden specimens from a structure on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey that carbon dating proved the material was 4800 years old, around the same time the ark is said to have been afloat.

Witherington is quick to warn us that it is more likely an old ark shrine set up by other ark hunters from long ago:

People, ancient and modern have been making pilgrimages to the Ararat mountain region,  and at various points in history, it appears some enterprising souls have set up ark shrines, with some replica elements, to encourage tourism (and indeed to collect tourist denarii).  This has been going on since time immemorial.  It is possible another ark shrine has been found, like the one found in the 70s, only this one seems more substantial.

You can read a lengthier story from Fox News here. Well, whatever it is, I smell another documentary by James Cameron coming.  What do you think?

  1. This isn’t the first time they found the ark. They also found it in the 90’s and maybe one other time before that.Remember, they aren’t scientists. Before we get to the carbon dating, how about we see the wood, pictures, and layout of the thing they’ve found ?
