A long time dream for Mound is getting closer to being realized. My original call to ministry was more specifically a call to bring a fresh approach to youth ministry to my home town of Mound. Most of you know that I spent a couple years leading a grassroots youth movement called Revolution in Mound back in 2005-2007. We made some noise for Jesus, attracted large crowds of local teens to music outreach events, and hosted a Bible study in our home on Monday nights.
While that ministry was relatively short-lived, and Keri and I had to “pull up anchor” on that effort prematurely for personal reasons and lack of support, God used that season of my life to sow a seed deep within me (and the community, I pray) that may be coming close to sprouting at last! Kingdom advancement often follows the “mustard seed principle.”
Years later we now have a growing new church at MainStreet in Mound, and this fall we will launch MainStreet’s youth ministry programs aimed at reaching displaced, dechurched, and unchurched Westonka youth and families for Christ.
We believe many families are looking for a local church with a fresh vision for youth ministry and a new approach to Confirmation. MainStreet has very few youth currently, but this will not prevent us from announcing to the entire community that something new is coming this fall — something all families should check out! To quote a favorite Iowa-based movie, “If you build it, they will come.” We believe this is true in this case!
Some advantages we have as fall launch approaches include:
- A large, enthusiastic team of Crown College youth volunteers and interns!
- A college student led youth worship band!
- A history and reputation for effective youth ministry from Revolution days.
- Hopefully a new MainStreet ministry facility opening this fall (still pending).
Next time I will share the NAME we are giving MainStreet’s new youth ministry. You can get a sneak peek at MainStreet’s website. :)
